Recently the Worth His Salt blog posted an report about how they were using Coconut Oil with their son Jackson, who has Cystic Fibrosis. What is Cystic Fibrosis?
"Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that:
In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond." - from http://www.cff.org/great_strides/cffactsheet/
Jackson's mother Amy did her homework on coconut oil, and understood that the medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil are not only good in fighting pathogens, but also more easily digested than longer chain fatty acids. This is apparently good news for those with Cystic Fibrosis, who struggle with malabsorption of fats and proteins, according to Amy.
Amy gives coconut oil in Jackson's diet a positive report:
"For one, we have been free of oral and intravenous antibiotics since Jackson's release from the hospital in October, the same time at which I adopted coconut oil as a primary calorie supplement in his diet. (Addendum- since writing this post, J has begun a new course of oral antibiotics, but considering this is his first winter and he went almost 4 months without them, I still think we're ahead of the curve!)"
Jackson has not yet reached his first birthday. We are pleased to hear Amy's report, and look forward to hearing more progress in the future! Read about Jackson and his family on their blog here.
