OK, since my eye sight is so bad thanks to my condition, it is just too much to read and read, can you shorten my journey please by telling me exactly what I need to do to start my coconut trip :)
I have been battling this for almost 5 years now. I am trying everything. Then my husband bought this coconut oil for his hair and didn't like it. I am frugal so I decided to look up other ways it is good for and found that it is a thyroid/weightloss cure....
My question is how do I utilize this. Is it in pill form, I see someone say 3 tablespoons?? Do I just cook with it? Can I buy a coconut and place it in a food processor and drink it or does it have to be oil??? Please let me know all the different ways this can help me please. Thank you so much.
This problem has ruined my life.

I would love to know the supplements that you are taking I am in a brain fog right now and my vision keeps getting worse. I just took my first dose of coconut oil but it was cooking coconut oil since that was all I have in the house. I need good advice. Oh yea, my name is Julie 2 so just call me Julie H. Thanks.

Absolutely! Join the conversation! The more the better. My hope is to continually update every so often. I know I am not on coconut oil so much right now. I will continue to cook with it ask I firmly believe coconut oil and olive are very good for our health. It has now been since about mid-Feb since I started with the dietician. I am on a lot of amino acids and vit C and B6. I am taking magnesiu (500 mg) at night to help me sleep, along with a handful of walnuts (i have to prepare walnuts by soaking them in water for 12 hours, you check this method out and reasons for it via internet). I think part of my hormone health (or really lack there of it) affects my sleeping...primarily "restless leg syndrome" hits me in the middle of the night and wakes me up unconsciously (sp). I honestly notice a difference in my sleep habit. just have to make sure I stop liquids by 8, otherwise i wake up to go pee.
I take 2 supplements before I work out (30 min prior). And I feel I can do about 200 calories more than previously. When I am done with my excercise (eliptical), my legs do not feel shaky. I don't know if I am allowed to say what the products are, as they are so specific to that company. would be happy to if anyone is interested. I have lost 5 pounds now (at least 9 more to go). And I am not as hungry as before. The supplements I use for a workout are a heavy dose of amino acids (those found in conjunction with rDNA...ribose) and some kind of collagen mix...smells and tastes like vanilla.
I am feeling about 80% healed. Who knows, the lack of energy I have had...I may only be 60%. If I never get any better than this, I would be really happy. But my dietician, there is more energy to come. I have come down from needing a 2 hours nap every day to 2 days a week needing a nap and those naps are only 15-20 minutes long. I have found myself cleaning windows inside and out..something i have never done with this house in 5 years( when i moved in). I have started to clean base boards and many more things because I am bored and need to use up some energy.
In addition I have started to use a pregnalone supplement. This supplement hormone will convert to estrogen or progesterone (and I think a couple of other hormones) as my body needs it. I have only been on it a week so far. I will let you know if there is a difference or a side effects. Most people get really intimidated by using sex hormones. But I really trust this dietician. And I don't expect to be on it for too long.
In summary, I am feeling so much better. In fact I was reporting on FB today that I only got 3 hours of sleep last night and still functional all morning long with a toddler. I did take a nap, but that nap was not a very deep nap. I lasted about 45 minutes. Previously, I would have taken a 3 hour nap and would have spent the morning with my kid on the couch. this difference is truly amazing.
I hope to report back to you all in about a month. I have not had a blood test recently (still scared of a disappointment). But until about 2 weeks ago I was taking my first round of supplements about 45 minutes after my levothyroxine...and I wonder if that was preventing the medicine. I changed my levo to night time where I don't take as many supplements. And actually I have noticed more hypo symptoms coming back (poor breathing, heart palpitations..just not very bad and not for very long, and sometimes really sleepy). And when I get HYPER I get the same symptoms, so I am encouraged. Will let you know!

@ Julie: Hope you are doing well! I have not been on here in months, sorry.
@ Char: Have you asked your dr. about Armour or Nature-thyroid?
This past summer my thyroid levels fell and I was whipped. From August to December I battled a nearly constant vaginal yeast infection. Found out I was pregnant end of September and wondered if it all stemmed from that. I was so fatigued and would have stayed in the bed forever if I didn't have small children to care for. My OB/GYN ordered an ultrasound of my thyroid to test for cancer since my goiter returned. Talk about being scared. Thank God the results were negative! So we began discussing options and changing my meds. I asked about Armour since I've heard all good about it and he said he thought that was a good place to start. (My reg. NP refused to prescribe it for me.) He said if Armour didn't work, we'd try name brand Synthroid plus a T3 with it. I'm pleased to report that I feel better than I have in over 10 years. My pregnancy is going well and I'm still in love with EVCO!
I hope you both are good results and that your health is improving. Oh! Forgot to mention I'm still losing weight. A total of 26 lbs. since starting the EVCO, 9 of that since I became pregnant. How about them apples?!?!?

Char, i am with you on eating so little. Food is just not that fun to me...more of a nuisiance. And yet if I kicked but for about 3 days on exercise and ate right and then took a day off, I would gain all my weight back plus some. Very frustrating. Your thyroid is DEFINATELY affecting your fatigue and weight loss. Keep us posted. It is easy for most to come on here tell us that you are starting coconut oil. But I personally want to hear from you as more months go by. I found that I actually got warm within a month of starting VCO. I only went down one dose...but a good direction to take! Give it at least a couple of months. Also start out slow otherwise you will get nausea and/or diarhea. BLESSINGS!

I found out about 10 or 11 years ago that I had hashimotos. My Dr. said that my thyroid was completely dead, that he had never seen numbers like mine before. He put me on meds and checked me often for the first couple of years. Now it is just once a year that I get checked. I take levothyroxine and cytomel. I was told that that should help with my energy. It hasn't.
I have been feeling really tired and am getting depressed from being tired and not being able to lose weight. I have never been a person who likes food so I really don't eat much. I pretty much eat just enough to keep me alive, so I can't figure out why I weigh so much and can't lose it even with exercise. Found this site yesterday and I am hoping that it helps.
Been buying coconut oil for a while now but only used it when we made popcorn. Had no idea that it was supposed to be good for you. So, I am going to give this a try!
I've been reading here and I feel there is some support with some of you and I hope that I can join in and talk with you.
Thank you.

@ Norma - I will be asking my doctor about this Pathroid, too. Thanks for the advice!
@ Selah - My hubby got the book "Nourishing Traditions" for me, but I haven't read a lot yet (I have small children!). Have you gone to www.westonaprice.org yet? There's tons of info there. I have lost 20 pounds since November, keeping it off, too! The only major changes are adding coconut oil (1 or 2 Tbl./day), and cutting out all other oils at home except organic butter, extra virgin olive oil and extra virgin coconut oil. I really should cut eating out all together, because I feel tons better when we don't eat out. Blah to the soy/corn oil! Makes me sluggish. So, let's think for a moment... if I'd actually exercise, I might start really ping the pounds. :)
@ Julie - Glad to hear how you're improving!!! Woohoo!
Hope to hear from you all soon!

actually it sounds really good. hope more on this site see that and can use that. I have started on these supplements with this dietician and really think I near to the end. Building up reserves...that is improtant. But I think the key to know is that my specific condition is a condition...not hashimoto or cancer. I can can look back and see my health dwindle due to stress and poor eating habits. Good INFO! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Cassie and Julie,
May I join your conversation? Last year, I was clinically diagnosed with hypothyroidism and adrenal exhaustion (and other problems). Since then, I have learned many things that may improve my health. Coconut oil was said to be a good fat so I have been eating more of it. Tonight, I found this forum and hope to learn more about coconut oil. I wonder what the proper amount is? What should the daily intake be?
I have heard of the book, Healing Traditions. Didn't one of the authors work with Weston Price? I believe he was a researcher/dentist who found a connection between dental conditions and health. Have you heard about this? Do you think there is a connection?
Another question: Does coconut oil help a person lose weight? I heard that it does and one of you reported lost pounds without seemingly trying. Sounds great. Good for you! I just lost some weight too. Take care, and thank you for writing on this forum.
Blessings to you,
Selah*

Hi Cassie! Well, I did get off of coconut oil for the time being. I am taking so many other supplements right now and sometimes I have a hard time regulating the coconut oil so that it won't give me diarrhea. I still plan to cook with it for life (along with olive oil). It has been about 2 months since I started with the dietician and using various supplements and consuming a lot of homemade chicken soup. I have started to see improvements in energy. It is great. I have started to do chores around the house that I have never done since I moved in 5 years ago! I still take many naps, but that is needed since I believe my cause of hypo is due to adrenal fatigue. I will be starting even more supplements tomorrow. The dietician has told me not to do aerobics since I started with her, but I can walk for up to 30 minutes every day. I have gained 4 pounds now, but heck I haven't been able exercise! It has either been dreadfully cold outside, rainy, or a bad allergy day. It has only be a week now that it has been pleasant and was able to walk. And lost 1 pound in that time (though i ate a lot tonight so i probably gained it back!). But I hope she gives me the green light to start back at exercising. But the fact that I have energy is AWESOME! The supplements are mostly B6, Vit C, some amino acids. My hope is that by the end of the month I will need to get my blood tested and find that i need to lower my dose. She thinks my case is rather mild and should be cured in a few months. I bought a home TSH test for $25 and hope to use it soon. I just don't want to spend $88 every time I test and just in case my blood work is the same....I hope to report back to you over these next few month with great news and that it helps you out! This hypothyroid and symptoms has to go!

Julie,
I know what you mean about certain food not tasting as good as it used to. What a blessing to help stay away from it. I'm really happy with the way EVCO helps satisfy my appetite. Hope you are recovering from the kidney stones/surgery. Sorry it's taken me so long to reply.
Haven't gotten the book, yet. The authors are Sally Fallon and Dr. Mary Enig, the latter is quoted on www.coconutoil.com. If you haven't read any of her work, do so, it's eye-opening.
I'm still losing weight steadily, about a pound a week. That's supposed to be the best way to lose. It took me years to gain it, so if it takes years to lose it, that's alright. As long as I'm becoming healthier!! :o)
Chat with you soon,
Cassie

Hi Cassie, no I have not heard of the book. What have you heard about it? I have never had an issue with my goiter. In fact, my endocrinologist when she feels my throat swears that I don't have thyroid issues. Except my bloodwork states the opposite.
I had an appt with a dietician to help me figure out what exactly I should and not eat, and what I should take for supplements, yesterday. I was sooo excited about it. I don't remember if I told you I was talking to a doctor about the adrenals being the underlying cause. He says my case seems to be uncomplicated and thus very hopeful I can get back to normal (I am being a hopeful...synic (sp)with this news). Anyways, I had to cancel because I started kidney pain the day before. Lo and behold I had kidney stones (got the surgery today).
But so far on the diet, I am doing really well and not craving too much. After surgery today I requested Arby's. I could feel guilty, but when I ate my lunch it just didn't taste as good as I remembered, so the transition will be that much easier! I am off my supplements for a couple of days now to get back on my "normal" schedule. I will add them again in a couple of days. At first I thought with all the changes I created the stones! But my doctor said as big as they were, it took several months, perhaps as much as 6.
Hope to post next week. Nice to have a forum buddy! Oh, have you tried stevia with your family? I don't know if it will be enough for them, but maybe in small amounts without them knowing and then eventually getting them off completely. Don't know.
Julie

Julie,
I forgot to mention that my goiter reduced in size as well after starting the EVCO. Do you have a goiter with your thyroid condition?
We're planning to reduce sugars even more, at present trying to use only organic raw sugar at home, or honey, in moderation at that. Explaining that to my kids when they're begging for a sucker or something is like trying to pull my own teeth. But I'm determined to instill better eating habits in them than I grew up with.
Have you read the book "Nourishing Traditions?" I've seen a lot of talk about it and think I'm going to look for a copy.
Getting healthier,
Cassie

I am also greatful to hear of other stories. It just seems that so many people on here only report the first few weeks or they will be starting.
I am on day 3 of a new diet. Not terribly hard right now. I have minute amounts of sugar. For example, the Hidden Valley Ranch mixture has dextrose in it, but I am mixing it with sour cream (which has milk...so I am lactose as well). Otherwise, I have cut the instant coffee I usually have (mainly to have it with the VCO). Instead, I made eggs and put the oil in there.
Interesting to note...must be a fluke...that I am down 2 pounds since the weekend. I haven't exercised and I felt that I have eaten MUCH more than normal. But my food in 3 days has been raw summer squash, celery, cucumbers (with the ranch dip mentioned), chili (tomatoes, beans, meat), cheese, pineapple, chicken, eggs with spinach, onion, peppers, mushrooms. I have added about 1 T of VCO to make it about 3 T a day now. I was just shocked when I got on the scale. I reweighed 8 or 9 times.
I have been doing more research on adrenal fatigue and actually in contact with this doctor. His service is free. But I intend to make a contribution as I see myself improve. And yes I really do believe I will be healthier soon.
My plan now is to get back on my levo 112 tomorrow. Monitor how I feel and get my blood checked as needed. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you look at things...I feel much better off the drugs. And I wonder if I keep on the drugs if my thyroid will atrophy. But looking at bloodwork will be an encouragement if my doctor sees that she needs to lower my dosage again. When I see my doctor, I will tell her what I am doing and see if she wants to be a part of the experiment (she is fairly open to experiments).
Cassie, continue to reduce the sugars. I am reading a lot that we are really taxing the insulin with all these sugars which leading to our bodies yelling at us. Congrats on a great weight loss. That is really amazing. I can't say that it has helped me lose weight. But I can feel it doing something, as I have more motivation to exercise more, more optimistic demeanor too.
Keep me posted as well.
Blessings!

Hi Julie,
Our stories are very similar, except that I have Hashimoto's hypothyroidism and need to lose about 100 lbs! I started using EVCO the week of Thanksgiving 2009, and have lost 14 lbs. WOOHOO! I also take 125 Levo daily, and totally understand the fatigue you're experiencing. I've not been brave enough to the meds yet, but plan to see a natural doctor after I have some bloodwork done, soon.
Some of the diet changes my family is pursuing include: much less refined sugar, substituting it with honey and grade B maple syrup, absolutely NO artificial sweeteners; no more fast food ;o); avoiding soy, which can be tricky since it's in almost everything that's not raw; and avoiding hydrogenated oils. We only use EVCO, EV olive oil, organic butter (and sesame oil on occasion) to cook with at home. By excluding bad oils and adding EVCO, I noticed an almost instant relief from the fatigue and foggy headedness related to hypothyroidism. Wow! Even had trouble sleeping if I took it too late in the day. Do you take EVCO in the morning only, or throughout the day? I've read some other posts that discuss varying the times you take it, to see what works best for you. Worth a try!
I look forward to hearing more about your results and successes using EVCO!
Take care,
Cassie

I started VCO in Oct 2009. At that time I was on 125 levo for my hypo. I was on Armour previously and was doing well, as far as energy was concerned. But then the FDA started closing down desicated natural products such as these and now I can't get armour. I started trying VCO at 1T, but was getting nausea and diarhea really bad, so I backed off a little. I can now do 1-2 T and hope to keep increasing my dose. Before Armour, I was 125 Levo for a few years. In Dec 2009, my doctor brought my Rx down to 112. I am hopeful! But as of my blood test in mid Jan, I still need to be 112. But being on Levo, I am sooo tired. Even my husband sees a marked difference in my energy and is encouraging me to seek other alternatives...no matter to what extreme.
Last week I decided to get off Levo for a matter of days. I won't stay off of it too long as when I was diagnosed I had at least a liter of fluid around my heart. That much of fluid is rather scary. I also had EXTREME symptoms. So I will probably get back on the medication in a couple more days. This is currently day 6 off the medication and I started to feel a little more energy yesterday. But I will probably take the Levo in a couple more days. some people view this as dangerous, but I need energy!
I have also been doing research on the foods I eat. Which I eat a lot of breads/pastas/pizzas and refined foods, blah, blah. In short, really bad foods. So starting this week I will be starting a really strict (to some degree so I don't burn out) healthy diet. From reading Dr. Mercola's articles and articles from this website, I have been taxing my insulin for too long and need to start healing my cells. I am still trying to read these articles again to fully comprehend what my body is doing.
I have been trying to shed 12-15 pounds for months now. I was able to lose a couple of pounds a few years ago before I had my son...but back then I was on Armour. But now when I lose weight I can gain 2-3 pounds back all in one day if I don't work out. And some days I can gain a full pound even if I burn more calories than I consume! It is very discouraging.
In conclusion, I hope to keep you all informed of my progress. I am only starting the change in lifestyle (new eating habits) this week. So it will probably be a little while. However, in addition, I will start taking more supplements. I will be taking Vitamins A B C D E, selenium, omega-3. If anyone has information where I can find out how much to take exactly and if I need other supplements, that would be wonderful (I heard of kelp supplement?).
Wish me luck! I am tired of being tired and getting no where with weight loss.
Oh I will say this about VCO!: I have better skin, and I am warmer...I am warmer in the winter months! This has been unheard of for me. For once I am the one who has to warm up my husband. It is usually the other way around. Unfortunately, I am not seeing a great improvement in my energy. But I plan to consume VCO for a couple of years. As I know this oil is very healthy and healing my adrenals and thyroid is NOT over night.
Also, does anyone have insight on steps to heal adrenals? I have a feeling I am more prone to Hypothyroidism due to genes but I really destroyed my cells in college stressing over projects and tests. but i believe they can be healed (against what most doctors believe!).
Blessings!
