| Gastritis and weight loss [Forum: Digestive Health] |
Wed, 10 Mar 2010 10:53:00 EST |
I was diagnosed with gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining) 4 months ago, after my gastroenterologist did an endoscopy. I also had blood work which came up negative for H-Pylori, and didn't show anything serious. My symptoms are that I feel queezy and nauseated sometimes during the day, and depending what I eat, it may wake me up at night (nausea, heart pounding), then it goes away. I also have some IBS symptoms periodically...cramps, then diarrea. During this whole process, I've changed my diet to more restricted one since I can't eat certain foods right now. Well, in the last 4 months, I've lost like 16 lbs, and I'm very small to begin with. I am trying to incorporated healthy, more fattening foods into my diet like just started with the coconut oil 2 days ago on toast with almond butter and honey, also Olive Oil, Potatoes, etc. I can't seem to gain any weight though. I heard that Coconut Oil makes you lose weight....I HOPE NOT!! I thought it would help me gain weight. My gastro said that people with gastritis don't necessarily lose weight, so he want's me to come back to weigh me, even though all my blood work and endoscopy came up normal. I thought it would be normal to lose weight, and I've read it online several times! Is anyone experiencing this problem?? How can I gain weight back, without getting symptoms? Thanks.

Yep, in fact you'll notice I just posted another thread about feeling sick after taking it - straight from the spoon.
It doesn't seem to be as bad when I mix it in with food.

Julie,
I know what you mean about certain food not tasting as good as it used to. What a blessing to help stay away from it. I'm really happy with the way EVCO helps satisfy my appetite. Hope you are recovering from the kidney stones/surgery. Sorry it's taken me so long to reply.
Haven't gotten the book, yet. The authors are Sally Fallon and Dr. Mary Enig, the latter is quoted on www.coconutoil.com. If you haven't read any of her work, do so, it's eye-opening.
I'm still losing weight steadily, about a pound a week. That's supposed to be the best way to lose. It took me years to gain it, so if it takes years to lose it, that's alright. As long as I'm becoming healthier!! :o)
Chat with you soon,
Cassie

I agree with this.

It may also be because you took the oil straight. Adding it to food is best, and it is even easier to digest if you cook with it. The best way to use coconut oil is to just replace your other oils with it.

I found it took about a week of regular use for the coconut oil to not upset my stomach anymore.

Don't use the microwave if you have to melt it.
You can melt it in a pot on the stove with no ill-effects.
You can also melt it in your tea or coffee and drink it that way!
I personally like to make chocolate pudding from coconut milk and while the pudding is still warm, stir in some coconut oil and eat it that way!

Does heating the oil in the microwave to make it easier to eat negate the benefits?

No, you are not destroying the coconut oil by heating it up! That's part of why it's so fantastic. Very heat stable.

I have been using the coconut oil for about a week now. For my afternoon snack, I pop 1/2 cup popcorn in one tablespoon coconut oil. The popcorn tastes great and I still get the coconut oil. I'm not destroying the goodness of the oil by cooking it, am I?

My guess is yes but not as concentrated as the oil so you'd need to eat lots more of it?
Anyway I have them both, i use the milk or cream now instead of rice milk when cooking.
yum.

| how does it fit in with an athlete's diet [Forum: General] |

I am a cyclist and I would like to know how I can incorporate using coconut oil in my diet while still be able to get the carbs I need for my sport. All I ever read is that you need 3 T. well I can't sacrifice 300+ calories in my diet for just fat, plus it freaks me out, because I used to be fat phobic so it's really hard for me to come around to that much fat, although I know it's good for me. Right now I am trying to get to 1T. of co a day, but I'm not into my heavy training yet. I haven't seen any question about athletes on this forum so I hope I can get a response. Someone wrote in a few years ago but there was no response. If you even know who I could go to to inquire about this I would apppreciate it!
Also if you eat that much coconut oil how do you make room in your diet for other good fats such as nuts. I just don't understand.

| Feeling sick after eating the oil [Forum: General] |

Hi all,
I'm male, 26yrs old and am naturally slim - I'm taking it for other health reasons, one of which I think I have candida, also to help my digestion, hair and skin.
I've started taking:
1 tablespoon first thing in morning on empty stomach (also take 1 probiotic capsule)
1 tablespooon in the afternoon when i get home from work, before dinner
1 tablespoon mixed into my oats - before bed
I've only been doing it for a few days but am noticing that I can tend to feel quite sick (stomach) after it - most noticeably the afternoon dose. Last night, it also almost made me feel a sort of drunk/a bit spaced out.
Is this just normal? will it go away?

Hello,
I would just like to express how impressed I am with virgin coconut oil(VCO). In January of this year I was asked by my doctor to lose weight. Over the past 4 years I have progressively gained weight, even when I was training for a 10km run. Well, after going on a strict 'healthy' diet where I cut out fat, sugar, refined carbs, counted calories and exercised 6 days per week, I lost nothing after 4 weeks of this regime. I was very puzzled and searched the internet for answers, when I came across VCO and the bad effects of polyunsaturated fats. After cutting out all polyunsaturated fat from my diet and replacing it with VCO (and olive oil for salads), my energy levels have noticeably increased. I feel and sleep better, and in the last 2 weeks I have lost 2.5 lbs! I am so thankful to have found this product.

oh... p.s. I've lost about 4 lbs this week, so I'm thinking it is working. And the popcorn popped in the coconut oil keeps me so full that I am satisfied with a small dinner and no bedtime snack!
